12th APRU Doctoral Students Conference
  Call for Papers

    Tsinghua University (THU) is pleased to host the 12th Association of Pacific Rim Universities Doctoral Students Conference (APRU DSC) from July 4 to July 7, 2011 in Beijing, China. Approximately 130 doctoral students from APRU and several other universities are expected to join the 12th APRU DSC next year. The THU Organizing Committee hereby calls for papers to be presented at the 12th APRU DSC. Doctoral students from various disciplines are welcome to submit their abstracts relating to their areas of research. For participants of the 12th DSC, the conference will not only be a valuable academic experience to interact with other top doctoral students from around the Pacific Rim as well as leading academics from a variety of research fields, but also a unique opportunity to soak up the rich culture of Beijing and to experience campus life at one of China¡¯s leading universities.

    As you may already know, APRU is a consortium of 42 leading research universities in the Pacific Rim which aims to contribute to the economic, scientific and cultural development in the Pacific Rim through multi-faceted cooperation among the member universities.  An essential part of the consortium¡¯s efforts is the Doctoral Students Conference, hosted annually by one of the distinctive members of APRU. DSC aims to provide a platform for constructive communication among international doctoral students, thereby nurturing and supporting their professional aspirations in academia.

    The main theme of the 2011 conference is ¡°Innovation: Fostering Sustainable Development and Harmony among Pacific Rim Communities¡±. Papers that are to be submitted should focus on the key elements of the main theme - innovation, sustainable development and harmony. Originality and practicability of research will be highly-valued.

    The conference is composed of several segments, all carried out in English:
    1)     Paper sessions
    2)     Invited speeches
    3)     Special workshops
    4)     Tours, site visits and other activities

    Detailed information including the program schedule and logistics arrangements will be progressively made available on 12th APRU DSC website, http://apru.daf.tsinghua.edu.cn/

Paper sessions
    Paper presentations will be arranged according to six sub-themes which will cover a span of disciplines that are pivotal in understanding the status of a modern Pacific Rim and in dealing with its extant problems with innovative and effective methods. The suggested sub-themes are:
    1)     Promoting Human Development through Inclusive Growth
    Inclusivity, scientific and harmonious development, modernization, equal rights and opportunities, fair distribution of nation¡¯s wealth and achievements of development, livelihood programs, economic structures and growth patterns, reciprocity, liberalization, regional protection and security, disadvantaged groups, etc.
    2)     Innovation of Science and Technology
    Space technology, information technology, materials technology, green technology (e.g. clean energy and new energy sources, pollution control, eco-friendly vehicles), extreme manufacturing, etc.
    3)     Globalization and International Cooperation
    Commerce, trade and finance, international law, population studies, citizenship education, environmental preservation, global health, human rights, protection of diversified culture, anti-terrorism, etc.
    4)     Maintaining Sustainable Development through Education, Culture and Art
    Liberal arts education, teacher training, literature, linguistics, philosophy, world history, sociology, anthropology, psychology and counseling, cultural studies, religion, public arts, minority art, media studies, translation and interpretation, etc.
    5)     Life Sciences and Health
    Biotechnology, bioinformatics, neuroscience, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, medical science, nutrition science,  pharmaceutical science and preventive medicine, health science and physical education, sports and human kinetics, etc.
    6)     Youth¡¯s Responsibilities and Leadership
    Effective leadership and governance, social responsibility, leadership and positive influence, ethical leadership, entrepreneurship, talent and skills development, models and strategies for fostering competencies, etc.

    All papers are to be written in English, which is the official language of the 12th APRU DSC. Abstracts and papers are expected to be submitted under the 6 sub-themes, and drawn from, but not limited to the following disciplines:

    Anthropology, archeology, arts, biology, business, chemistry, commerce, computer science, earth sciences, economics, education, engineering, health care, history, information technology, international relations, law, life sciences, linguistics, literature, mathematics, medicine, philosophy, psychology, physics, political science and sociology.

    Participants can write papers on other research areas in addition to those listed above in accordance with the conference theme.

Invited speakers
    Speakers of international influence and fame will be invited to share their thoughts and experiences in relation to the conference theme. These, combined with site visits are expected to build up materials for discussions in a special workshop.

Special workshop
    We will arrange a special workshop under the theme of ¡°Youth¡¯s Responsibilities and Leadership¡±. The workshop will feature entrepreneurs, and young leaders both in China and across the world to share experience and stories of their own and to call upon the collective awareness of social responsibilities of the youth in the new century.

    The workshop will be conducted in the form of a lunch talk, which aims to achieve the best possible effect through cordial and relaxed communication.

Tours, site visits and other activities
On-campus: Local student guides will lead our guests on a tour through the beautiful, historical campus of Tsinghua University. Key labs and research centers are also open for this special occasion. It is also possible for participants to give presentations at such professional venues. You may also opt to join our APRU fun sports meeting and interact with other participants and students at Tsinghua.

Off-campus:
The last day of the conference is reserved for fun and adventure. The optional sightseeing sites include the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall, the Ming Tombs, the Confucian Temple, the Olympic Green and Miyun New Socialist Countryside. Get ready for the exploration of the ancient city of Beijing!

Post-conference:
There will be two optional tours to other cities in China after the conference that participants can choose from. The optional two cities are Xi¡¯an and Suzhou, which are famed representatives of northern and southern Chinese cities respectively, and are very popular tourist destinations. Participants, who are interested to sign up for either optional tour, are required to indicate their choice for this cultural field trip when registering online. A travel agency will provide participants with complete tour information and the applicable fees which are at reasonable prices. Payment information for the optional trip will be available on the APRU DSC website at http://apru.daf.tsinghua.edu.cn.

About Xi¡¯an and Suzhou:
Xi¡¯an is renowned for its ancient cultural heritage. It is one of the oldest cities in human history and the oldest city in China. It has been the capital city of China for many dynasties. The sublime legacies of five thousand years of Chinese history can be found all over the city. Famous travel sites include Imperial Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang and Terra Cotta Warriors, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower and the Famen Temple, etc.

Suzhou always has the reputation of ¡°Heaven on Earth¡± in China. It was a city full of classical Chinese gardens, nine of which are on UNESCO¡¯s World Cultural Heritage List. Suzhou is famed to be the ¡°Oriental Venice¡± for western tourists for it has abundant canals. The mild climate and ethereal beauty of the natural landscape and exquisite gardens attract tourists from all over the world. Their favorite sites include Tiger Hill, Huqiu Temple, Humble Administrator¡¯s Garden and Xuanmiao Temple.

    After receiving an acceptance e-mail notification of their abstract submissions, participants should register online at http://apru.daf.tsinghua.edu.cn.

Key dates
January 31, 2011:    Deadline for the first round of online abstract submission (Submissions made by this date will be given priority.)
March 1, 2011:         Deadline for the second round of online abstract submission
April 23, 2011:          Notification of acceptance of abstracts
May 7, 2011:             Deadline for online registration
June 4, 2011:           Deadline for full paper submission
July 4 ¨C 7, 2011:      12th APRU DSC at Tsinghua University

Abstracts Submission Guidelines:
    1.   Abstracts and corresponding full papers should be submitted in English using the online system, EasyChair at http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=aprudsc12. An instruction of how to use EasyChair will be posted on our website at http://apru.daf.tsinghua.edu.cn/Papers.htm.

    2.   There will be two rounds of abstracts submission. The deadline of the first round is January 31. The second round is from February 1 to March 1. Abstracts submitted during the first round will be given priority over those submitted during the second round.

    3.   Each abstract should contain a description of the paper in 300-500 words. All abstracts must contain the following information: title, author(s)¡¯s full name(s), institutional affiliation, nationality, research field and at most 5 keywords. The keywords are to provide information on the fields and/or issues covered by the paper, thus enabling the THU Organizing Committee to allocate papers to each session accordingly;

    4.   All abstract submissions must be formatted correctly. Abstracts that do not meet the guidelines will NOT be accepted. The official format and guidelines can be found at http://apru.daf.tsinghua.edu.cn/Papers.htm.

    5.   The person presenting the paper must be a doctoral student at an APRU member university by the time of abstract submission;
    Note: Approximately five (5) doctoral students studying at non-APRU universities will also be invited to present their papers at the DSC in order to widen the scope of the conference. In this case, the papers should have connection to the Pacific Rim region, and the invited students must provide letters of recommendation issued by their institutes.

    6.   In the case of multiple authors, the name of the person who will present the paper at the DSC should be clearly indicated in the abstract. The submitting author is expected to ensure that the presentation of the paper is approved by his or her institute and co-authors;

    7.   If the total number of submissions in the two rounds exceeds 130, the THU Organizing Committee reserves the right to screen abstracts primarily on the basis of their quality. The balance in presentations across countries, universities, and disciplines will also be taken into consideration. Abstracts submitted in the first round will also be given priority;

    8.   It should be noted that students¡¯ participation in the 12th APRU DSC depends entirely on whether their abstracts are accepted by the THU Organizing Committee. Once the abstract is accepted, the submitting author must agree that the corresponding paper will be presented at the DSC or forfeit the right to join DSC by notifying the committee within the two weeks of receiving the notification of acceptance;

    9.   THU Organizing Committee will send e-mail notifications regarding the acceptance or rejection of the abstracts to the submitting authors by April 23, 2011. If the abstract is accepted, the notification will include the date and time of the session and presentation. Upon receiving the notification of acceptance, the participant must submit the full paper at http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=aprudsc12  no later than June 4, 2011;

    Apart from paper sessions, the conference will also initiate a series of workshops for the benefit of doctoral students. For the participants, workshops offer them the opportunities of networking, sharing peer reviews and developing a deep understanding of the conference theme. Workshops of APRU DSC are traditionally organized by students and for students.

Financial Support
    1.   DSC participants will be provided with accommodation from July 3 to 8, 2011 (five nights). However, only twin rooms (two beds) are free of charge. The participants who would like to book a single room (one bed) and/or who would like to extend their stay will need to pay extra fees. Please note that rooms are subject to availability;

    2.   Participants will also be provided with free round-trip transportation between the airport and Tsinghua University, thus participants should provide their flight details in the online registration;

    3.   No registration fee will be charged for the 12th APRU DSC.
